U.S. Navy Requisitions Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Forklifts

The U.S. Navy is looking to kit-out their forklifts at American Military depots with hydrogen powered forklifts. Contracts have been awarded and work has begun.

The RFP stated goals were:

• To reduce existing oil consumption rates
• To initiate the transition towards a future hydrogen economy.

The concept is that existing electric-powered forklifts would have their current battery pack replaced by new hydrogen fuel cell units. The contract was awarded to Air Products & Chemicals of Allentown, PA for the research and development phase. The entire project is expected to be completed by September 2010.

In total, the US military supplies agency operates over 3,000 forklifts and about half are electric-powered. Some problems to be solved are whether to contain the hydrogen in a filling-point structure or whether to produce it on the spot. However, forklifts in indoor operations do not need to hold their hydrogen for long periods, don’t need long endurance, and can refuel as often as they like, which makes them ideal for this type of hydrogen fuel cell application.
